Bristol music people. This whole St Philips Gate mystery-venue-that-has-to-keep-moving-its-gigs-to-other-venues thing has been troubling me. So I did what all good troubled people should do and went out and paced every yard of the St Philips and Feeder Road area to see if there was anything to find.
And the answer is, not much.
I was keeping a lookout for new buildings, empty buildings, signs of conversion, and licencing applications. While there was nothing that looked remotely new build that wasn’t already taken by a business, there were only very few empty units, and few of them of a size that would match the scope of the gigs the promoters are putting on.
Indeed, there was only really one place that looked big enough and with enough space around it to put on such big shows – a massive old marine parts warehouse down Chapel Road that doesn’t appear to have been touched in years, and still had a To Let sign festering on the outside gate.
By the looks of the outside it would make a cracking venue, and it is roughly where the dot on some of the maps on the ticketing sites suggest that it is, but there’s little to suggest that any work’s been done on it at all.
And as far as the licencing notices go, the was one on Motion crossroads about an event on 26 August – interestingly the dates of one of the moved Skyline series – but it didn’t mention where it was for, and it was in the name of Motion. So it would probably have been for there.
So there you have it. Unless there’s some incredibly discrete works going on there’s nothing to suggest that there’s anywhere in St Philips that’s remotely gig ready. So bear that in mind if you’re buying tickets for their events, because it’s going to get shunted, if it runs at all!

They’ve been working hard on the new site for the last year solidly. It’s not a new build it’s in an existing warehouse.

My best guess is this place, behind Rooftop Studios. It would be a hell of a venue!
