I’ve long thought that the term “gun control” was the worst idea of branding a decent cause ever. No one likes to be “controlled” which is what reverberates for even moderate gun owners. BTW I never touched a gun after Nam.
Besides there are far too many out there to ever get back. Focus on making ownership of any magazine above a small size for hunting illegal. Second, make it illegal by ANY means to turn a semi-automatic weapon into automatic firing. Third and hardest, go for the next step only after the first two are achieved. No open nor concealed carry unless you have a security related job or a permit that requires passing a test and having insurance (like we do for driving). Not foolproof, but would regain the ground lost to the NRA over the past 50 years.
It’s vital to the effort to change the term “gun control” to something else to align with a re-focused agenda on the intent to save lives not control them. Ideas? We are way past any ability to pass perfect laws. We need a new foothold for saving lives.
I know this can seem simplistic and even disingenuous but in this age, simplicity of headline and message helps. MADD was a great acronym and bolstered the image and headline of persistent hard won efforts across every state. I don’t know the answers, but someone out there could strike the right banner. We need to rethink the strategy and tactics as well. As well meaning as every effort has been, results are getting worse not better.

I’ve seen ‘gun violence prevention’ – a mouthful but on target message- wise, and ‘gun safety’ – not quite accurate message, but easier to say/use. Could try to popularize GVP – which I like, bec it hides the knee-jerk ‘gun’ word, makes it seem more mainstream (if it becomes widespread) and is easy to say. (Also is similar to MVP making it seem like a high goal, maybe?).

I agree with you. But the question is, how do we put the genie back in the bottle? And start from a healthier and rational place? I remain, or try to remain, optimistic about most things, but the issue of guns is among the hardest as it is a central is…

Very true. My question, as well. But we need to start somewhere. A discussion I listened to talked about changing the culture to make it less acceptable, as was done with smoking and MADD. But it will be a long haul.

To paraphrase, Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a better result. The current approach has only slipped us deeper into the hole we now have to dig out of. We silently hoped each more deadly incident would wake the politicians up….

Softening the phrase gun control to “sensible gun laws” and “gun reform” did absolutely no good after Sandy Hook. I’m now going with a very straight forward BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS! Period!

We haven’t been persistent and uniform enough to change the message branding in the media headlines. See my comment on Sandy’s post. I agree they need to be banned, but we have to get off the “control” headline banner some way

Our nation glorifies violence and death. “Gun control” by any name will not stop it. Eliminate bump stocks and for a few bucks people will build them. In fact just by holding your thumb in your belt loop works as a bump stock.

Thus my comment on making the magazines illegal to use or own. Not enough to stop the sales and millions are already out there.

I know make it all illegal as that stopped the drug problems. No the real problem lies in the hearts and minds of our people our culture is sick, spritually sick and only a true change will solve our problems.

As you, I enjoyed studying history and social science. We can’t fix a sick society fast enough, it takes new generations as old biases literally die off with their owners. We can however mitigate the damage with practical rules of law however.
