So back in the late-90s I got a sniff of a story about a Hollywood actor who was just about coming to the showbiz fore. It told of a chap who was being banned from a number of upmarket hotels because he was habitually harassing the male porter staff.
My source was impeccable, and had never let me down before or since. But I had no first party people to quote, so decided to run the story as a blind item to see if anyone would pick up on it.
However, I was advised to drop the story by some senior management who suggested that this character (or his people) were incredibly litigious, and had a reputation for threatening to sue anyone who so much as suggested that they might be gay.
Whether this story was sound or just showbiz tittle tattle was never fully established, but I wasn’t surprised to see this fella in the news for some distinctly similar behaviour over the last couple of days.
So when people say “if anyone knew, then why didn’t they say anything?” about this kind of case, please be aware that it wasn’t always for wont of trying, but that for some of us jobbing scribes the risk of putting the story out there without the might of a major publisher and their legal department behind you is just a bit too high to take.
Hopefully though comeuppance will be very satisfyingly served.
So it has been revealed how the @ got into our lives. And it has a name too! Asperand. Comments comments
